Marco Rubio to Discuss Venezuelan Oil Expansion with India’s Reliance Industries

by admin477351

In a bid to enhance energy cooperation between the United States and India, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is advocating for increased involvement of India’s Reliance Industries in Venezuelan oil production and refining. During his visit to Mumbai, Rubio expressed his intention to discuss expanding Reliance’s processing of Venezuelan crude oil and exploring potential production opportunities in Venezuela.

Reliance Industries operates the Jamnagar refining complex in Gujarat, one of the largest refining facilities globally, with a combined capacity of approximately 1.4 million barrels of crude oil per day. Although the company currently imports Venezuelan oil, it does not engage in production activities in Venezuela. Rubio’s discussions aim to identify potential obstacles and opportunities for Reliance to deepen its participation in Venezuela’s oil sector.

Rubio’s visit to India aligns with ongoing efforts by Washington and New Delhi to finalize a trade agreement. Recently, the US administration waived potential additional tariffs related to India’s imports of Russian crude oil, a decision that could facilitate progress in trade negotiations. This move has been met with criticism from some US lawmakers who advocate for stronger economic pressure on Russia due to its actions in Ukraine. The administration plans to review its tariff policies in the coming weeks.

During his time in India, Rubio is also scheduled to meet with senior government officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and business leaders such as Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani. These meetings are part of broader efforts to strengthen commercial ties between the US and India.

India’s reliance on imports for over 85% of its crude oil needs underscores the importance of securing diverse and reliable energy sources to support its growing economy. Expanded purchases of Venezuelan crude oil could provide Indian refiners with additional supply options, while potential investments by Reliance in Venezuelan oil production could further bilateral energy cooperation.

The discussions reflect Washington’s strategy to bolster commercial relationships with India while exploring opportunities for US businesses and international partners in Venezuela’s energy sector. The outcome of these talks could have significant implications for the energy dynamics between these nations and the global oil market.
