Since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office, Mexico has been working to restore its security partnership with the United States, following a period of tension under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The renewed cooperation has been spearheaded by Omar García Harfuch, the Security Cabinet coordinator, who has actively engaged with top US officials to enhance intelligence sharing and combat organized crime. Mexican authorities have noted that quicker information exchanges have allowed for more effective responses to criminal activities.
Under Sheinbaum’s leadership, the Mexican government has reported significant achievements in law enforcement, including the arrest of tens of thousands of individuals, substantial seizures of weapons and drugs, and the dismantling of numerous clandestine drug labs. Additionally, Mexico has expedited the extradition of high-profile criminal suspects to the United States, and officials have observed a notable decrease in fentanyl trafficking.
This collaborative effort signifies a departure from the policies of López Obrador’s administration, which had strained ties by shutting down a US intelligence unit in Mexico and imposing stricter controls on foreign security agents. Relations hit a low point in 2020 with the arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos and disagreements over organized crime investigations. Tensions further escalated in 2024 amid reports linking drug-trafficking funds to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign, although these allegations did not lead to formal charges.
Despite the progress, Sheinbaum has consistently emphasized Mexico’s sovereignty and the necessity of mutual respect in bilateral relations. Her administration has voiced concerns over perceived attempts by US officials to influence or create divisions within Mexico’s security leadership. The relationship thus remains cautiously optimistic, with both nations striving for improved coordination against organized crime while Mexico insists on intelligence cooperation that respects its national sovereignty and interests.
