Manchester City were denied a crucial second goal by both the woodwork and excellent goalkeeping in their 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday. The result represents the champions’ third consecutive Premier League match without a win and leaves them five points behind Arsenal.

The second half saw City come agonizingly close to doubling their advantage when Bernardo Silva capitalized on a Brighton error. However, his shot struck the post and bounced to safety, keeping Brighton in the contest. The match became increasingly physical, with City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper engaging in a heated confrontation that resulted in yellow cards for both.
Brighton equalized in the 60th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, who produced a finish of genuine quality. The Japanese international received a pass from the flank, took a touch at the edge of the penalty area, and curled a precise low shot into the far corner.
The visitors took control after scoring, dictating the pace and creating several chances to claim all three points. Mitoma was instrumental in Brighton’s best opportunity, finding Gomez inside the box, but the midfielder’s effort was saved by Donnarumma. Mitoma’s rebound attempt from near the byline also struck the post. In the final moments, Haaland had a clear chance to win the match when he found himself one-on-one with Verbruggen, but the Brighton goalkeeper’s excellent save ensured the points were shared.
