As negotiations continue over the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), Mexico and the United States are edging closer to a new trade agreement. This development follows a recent phone conversation between Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump, where discussions centered primarily on trade matters.
President Sheinbaum, addressing the media on Friday, described the dialogue with Trump as productive, though she emphasized that a final deal has yet to be finalized. The call, which took place on Wednesday, was part of ongoing talks aimed at resolving trade issues, particularly those related to tariffs on Mexican automobiles, steel, and aluminum.
Sheinbaum noted that this was the 22nd conversation with President Trump since the start of the year, highlighting the frequency and regularity of their communications. She stated that these discussions are typically disclosed only when concrete agreements are in place.
The recent conversation was strictly focused on trade, according to Sheinbaum, with no discussions on other pressing bilateral issues like security or drug trafficking. These remain separate concerns in the broader context of U.S.-Mexico relations.
As both nations continue their dialogue, the focus remains on ironing out the remaining trade issues to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. The outcome of these negotiations could have significant implications for industries on both sides of the border, particularly in sectors subject to current tariff discussions.
