Cameroon’s Land Issues and Mass Graves: The Unfinished Business of French Colonialism

by admin477351

Beyond the headlines of France’s historic acknowledgment of its role in Cameroon lies the grim, unfinished business of colonialism: mass graves and unresolved land disputes. Activists say these tangible legacies of the conflict must now be the focus of the reconciliation process.
President Emmanuel Macron’s admission of French responsibility for a war that killed tens of thousands is a crucial first step. The conflict, which spanned from 1945 to 1971, saw French forces and their allies brutally suppress independence movements, leaving a trail of death and displacement.
Blick Bassy, a Cameroonian musician and co-head of the commission that investigated this history, emphasized the urgent, practical work ahead. This includes the effort “to locate and identify the bodies in mass graves and also to address the land issues that continue to affect a large number of Cameroonians today.”
France’s acknowledgment, while important, contained no apology or plan for reparations, which could have provided resources for such work. The burden now falls on both nations to move from historical recognition to physical and social repair, a process essential for healing the deep wounds left by decades of violent repression.
