At the United Nations General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco underscored Mexico’s dedication to national sovereignty while fostering international cooperation. Stepping in for President Claudia Sheinbaum, Velasco articulated Mexico’s stance on maintaining independence in its international dealings, emphasizing a strategy of collaboration without subordination.

Velasco’s address highlighted Mexico’s internal achievements, such as social policy advancements, poverty reduction, and a decline in homicide rates, linking these successes to a broader philosophy that sustainable peace is rooted in social development and respect for nations’ territorial integrity and self-determination. He also reinforced Mexico’s position on Middle Eastern affairs, advocating for a two-state solution and supporting Palestine’s right to exist within secure, recognized borders. Additionally, Velasco reiterated Mexico’s opposition to the U.S. embargo on Cuba and its commitment to providing humanitarian aid.

Beyond his speech, Velasco engaged in a series of diplomatic meetings with officials from countries including Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru, furthering Mexico’s goal of strengthening international partnerships. Discussions with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares focused on enhancing bilateral relations and preparing for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid. With Peru, Velasco announced plans to reopen embassies, marking a positive step in the restoration of diplomatic ties and a commitment to continued dialogue and mutual respect.

These dialogues also touched upon vital topics such as economic cooperation, strategic investments, the reform of United Nations institutions, and the enhancement of trade relations. Through these engagements, Mexico aims to bolster its role in multilateral institutions and reinforce its international influence while safeguarding its sovereignty.
